Globally, the personal training profession is growing faster than most careers. As part of the Life Fitness Academy, I’ve had the privilege of meeting trainers across the world, from South Africa to India and the U.S. to China, and personal trainers are striving to explore innovative training technique that will help their clients achieve lasting results. Coupled with the global health epidemic and a heightened awareness for the importance of exercise, personal trainers are in high demand not only in the U.S. but across the world.

You’ve decided to seriously invest in your health and hire a personal trainer.  It’s a great idea to have a dedicated fitness expert in your corner that can give you advice, keep you honest and produce results. Picking a trainer that can help you overcome your physical and emotional obstacles isn’t always easy. Be smart about your investment and take the time to choose your trainer wisely with these tips:

Do the research.  Don’t settle for the first trainer you see when walking through the gym door. Chemistry, education and skill set is important. The trainer you choose should meet your needs in motivational style, training techniques and price.  Referrals can be a good assessment of a trainer and always make sure they are certified by an National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCAA) accredited organization.

Please join me in congratulating the official 2012 Personal Trainer to Watch, Joanne Blackerby. The competition was strong (nearly 1,000 of the top personal trainers from every corner of the globe), but in the end, the honor went to Joanne, a trainer based in Austin, Texas, USA and the founder of Spirit Fitness.

Life Fitness and FitPro gathered an esteemed group of judges, including 2011 PTTW Nicole Nichols, who rigorously evaluated entrants based on a number of criteria in categories like member experience, community and volunteer involvement, education level, and tenure. In only the second year of competition, the invitation to enter was extended to personal trainers across the globe.  Our judges had no easy task on their hands, narrowing the field first to 20 semi-finalists, then to 10 finalists (see list below), and finally selecting Joanne to receive the top honor, which includes a package of valuable prizes such as a one-year membership to continuing fitness education resource PTontheNet, a piece of premium Life Fitness equipment, global recognition, and $5,000 to put towards her business, Spirit Fitness – a personal training co-operative in Austin, Texas.
