When Darian Vidaure, an ambitious college student, contacted us about obtaining a full report of the global Fitness and Technology Survey for reference in a school project, we were happy to share our findings with him. In exchange, we asked if he would be willing to share his observations with us as well. His study points to the same trends we’ve been finding: technology has changed, and will continue to change, the way we workout and connect at the gym.

Staying healthy can be a challenge when your job consists of sitting in a truck for up to 12 hours per day. In fact, statistics from the National Institute of Health show that more than 50 percent of truck drivers are obese, compared to the national rate of 26.7 percent. TravelCenters of America/Petro (TA) recognized an opportunity to provide its customers with tools to battle this growing problem. That’s why they launched the StayFit program in 2010 to provide fitness facilities and healthy lifestyle programs, free of charge to TA rewards members.

A new study from the PEW Research Center takes a closer look at one of the hottest fitness industry trends, health and fitness tracking. Sixty-nine percent of adults are tracking their health with measures such as body weight, calories and distance, and of those trackers, one in five does so using technology.

When you break down that data by age, you may be surprised to see that only eight percent of those technology-savvy trackers use a mobile app. Eight percent may not seem like a lot, but don’t be so quick to write off the thousands of available health and fitness tracking apps as useless. When app trackers are broken down by age, the percentage is double for the younger crowd.
