On behalf of the Life Fitness family and friends, we’d like to congratulate Life Fitness President Chris Clawson on his unanimous election as the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)  National Vice President, part of the organization’s volunteer leadership.

Chris has worked with the MDA for 7 years, extending the bridge between the fitness industry and the MDA that Life Fitness co-founder Augie Nieto established in 2005, when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

I just finished the 5K Race to Wrigley Field in Chicago. Who did I high-five at the finish? Not my best friend or little brother, but Jake, the IT analyst who sits two cubes away from mine. We’re part of the Life Fitness Running Club, which includes 70 other members out of our Chicago area offices.

The club meets on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon for runs around the Schiller Park/Franklin Park, Ill. neighborhood as well as Wednesday evenings, and Thursday mornings. To maintain membership we must meet with the club at least 3 times a month, but many of our members meet more frequently and our grove runs range anywhere from 2 to 6 miles long as a group.

I’m back at Life Fitness. Walking into the Franklin Park, Ill. facility a few months ago after being away for almost five years brought back a flood of memories. One memory stands out that involves the first time I walked through those same doors about 16 years ago.

I was working for another fitness equipment manufacturer, leading the strategy and development of our strength training products.  Like today, the fitness industry was very competitive, but then, companies either specialized in cardio or strength machines.  We were leaders in the strength category and trying to gain some momentum in the cardio market. Life Fitness was the leader in cardio, based on the Lifecycle exercise bike and a high performance treadmill, but also offered a computerized strength product called Lifecircuit, and had just purchased a small strength company in California. The landscape for fitness equipment manufacturers was going to change.
