In San Diego for IHRSA 2014, we’re honored to have Life Fitness legend and five-time Mr. Universe awardee Bill Pearl in attendance. His history of exercise excellence, Life Fitness support, and commitment to health and wellness make him an inspiration to us all. What’s more – his story is even more incredible than his resume.
First off, Bill Pearl’s first-ever bodybuilding victory was against James Bond. Think I’m kidding? In 1954, Bill Pearl won the amateur Mr. Universe title over none other than Sean Connery, who was nine years from his first appearance as 007 in Dr. No. From there on out, Bill was a global force. He won Mr. Universe in 1956, 1961, 1967 and 1971. He authored five books, had a bodybuilding column called “Pearl of the Universe,” and in 1974 was awarded “World’s Best-Built Man of the Century.” At 41-years-old, his arms measured 21 inches!
Health and wellness have always been at the forefront of Bill’s concerns, and he became the world’s best-known vegetarian bodybuilder at age 39. He gained further fame for his strongman routine, which included, incredibly, bending penny spike nails and tearing license plates in half. At home in Oregon, his pride and joy was the backyard barn – which he converted into a private, state-of-the-art health club for his friends and himself. Special workout guests included the Terminator and the Incredible Hulk (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, respectively).
Bill became affiliated with Life Fitness in 1988, when he was asked to become a consultant on our electronically-controlled Lifecircuit weight machines. Using button-activated technology to adjust resistance in concentric and eccentric movements, Bill immediately thought Lifecircuit had the potential to revolutionize the fitness industry. Augie Nieto offered Bill a job, who accepted on one condition – that he have every piece of Lifecircuit equipment put into his barn, to properly train on and analyze. Nieto agreed, and Bill Pearl has been a star on the Life Fitness team ever since.
Nowadays, Bill Pearl still travels thousands of miles to come to Life Fitness events, and still stocks his barn with the latest in Life Fitness equipment and technology. We’re thrilled to have him in attendance at the Life Fitness booth in San Diego for IHRSA 2014. Come by the booth to meet the man, the myth and the legend – he’s putting the fitness world on his shoulders all over again.
