There are more than 6 billion mobile subscriptions worldwide. Of mobile users in the U.S., 50 percent of those have smartphones. I’m sure you’ve seen an increase of these devices in your facility, but have you considered a mobile app for your gym? Your members are constantly connected and an app can be a great way for you to provide added value and convenience for members.

Is a mobile app right for your facility?

A mobile app customized for your fitness facility can provide members with convenient ways to check in to the facility, track their workouts, learn about promotions and more. The 2012 Fitness and Technology Survey found that 72 percent of exercisers are using technology to support their workouts, in and out of the gym. In addition, 57 percent are bringing a smartphone and/or tablet to the gym. They are already searching for great content and support, and an app specific to your gym can increase retention and revenue in a variety of ways. When we create an app for one of our partners, that research proves true. We find that 50 percent or more of members download an app when it’s advertised with our media kit and on the club’s website.

What can a mobile app do to increase revenue?

An app can affect your bottom line in several ways. Gym apps have proved a great recruitment tool. Most of our club partners ask prospects to download the app as part of the facility tour because they have found that those that download the app are much more likely to enroll as members. Features on the app can serve to support additional revenue streams as well including personal training offers, member referral programs, day passes and special promotions.

What can a mobile app do to increase retention levels?

Another startling statistic from the Fitness and Technology Survey: 33 percent of gym members would switch clubs for better access to technology. With an app, members will see your club’s logo every time they look at their phone, keeping you top of mind. An app can also tie your member’s personal life and goals to your specific gym. MiGym has workout tracking features that integrate with LFopen so members can track their Life Fitness cardio workouts right along side of their fitness classes and other workouts. The social features available on apps also mean more personal relationships with other members, staff and personal trainers. These features and relationships will make your club unique and valuable to your members – not just a collection of gym equipment.

How much does an app cost?

If you are building your own app you should budget a minimum of $50,000 for just the basic features; more features add to the cost and every year you'll want to budget 10-20% of the initial build cost for testing and maintenance. Continuous innovation will cost more. We've heard of facilities spending up to $250,000 to build their app only to find that they didn't get the features right and member adoption was low. Alternatively, you could partner with MiGym. We can build your app from our platform for as little as a one time $99 implementation fee and $99 per month. For customers with class schedules our pricing starts with a $299 implementation fee and $299 per month. We only charge an additional $25 per location for chains with more then 4 locations. Our month to month contracts take the risk out of the proposition. Testing and maintenance are included and we pass along new innovations each quarter.

How can you start creating an app?

MiGym can get an app out to your staff in time for the New Year’s crowd if you sign up now. You don’t pay for anything until 2013 for one of our standard custom app builds. So I invite you to check out our website www.migymapp.com to learn more.
