How To Say I Don't To Your Health Club

HowToSayIDontToYourHealthClub.jpgSome of the toughest break-ups involve the physical spaces we’re attached to, and that’s especially pronounced with our memberships to health clubs and gyms. But if a crucial facet of your exercise experience is off, it could lead to months of mediocre workouts and uninspired results.

Here are six signs that it’s time to break up with your gym and move on to greener pastures.

1. Price

Some gyms cost a pretty penny, and sometimes it’s worth the investment for equipment, classes and perks. However, if your hard-earned wages go to things you don’t use – such as a rock climbing wall or a fancy locker room – it might be time to get a better deal elsewhere.

2. Unfriendly Staff

When you walk into your gym, does the staff greet you and know who you are? Or do they appear disinterested and annoyed? Nothing can derail a good workout like a rude employee, and if your daily experience features an unwelcoming staff, it might be time to head for the exit.

3. Distance

Is your gym more than 15 minutes away? Aside from the inconvenience of extended travel times, having a long-distance club makes it easy to cancel workouts and stay at home – especially during the frigid winter months. Do yourself a favor and find a more favorable location.

4. Wait Times

If your gym becomes a zoo that causes you to loiter between sets, it’s more than an inconvenience – workout intensity and calorie-burning is drastically reduced when unwanted “rest time” occurs. Find a gym that doesn’t become an amusement park when you need it the most.

5. Mediocre Classes

For some of us, a big part of our gym memberships are the exercise classes we take. Be they yoga, cycling or group training, the success of each is contingent upon the skill of the trainer and the convenience of the schedule. If one of these isn’t working out, do some research and find a gym that meets your needs.

6. Equipment and Upkeep

Some of us appreciate cutting-edge equipment – like the Life Fitness Elevation Series with Discover Tablet Consoles – and some of us appreciate rugged Hammer Strength racks that will stand the test of time. However, if your gym’s equipment and facilities have become dog-eared, outdated, and even dirty, it might be time for a clean break.
