A Few Fit Tips Can Help You Survive the Traditional Holiday Eating Binge

SCHILLER PARK, Ill. – November 22, 2010 – The holidays are here and that means millions of Americans will once again overindulge at the dining room table. From turkey to hams, and pumpkin pie to canned yams, the choices will be scrumptious and the temptations overwhelming.

 “From office parties to family get-togethers, ‘tis the season for over eating,” says Kerri O’Brien, director of education at Life Fitness, the leader in designing and manufacturing high-quality exercise equipment. “Research shows that the typical holiday dinner alone can contain more than 3,000 calories. A meal like that can have serious weight gain consequences.”

 Fortunately, you can have your (fruit) cake and eat it too. According to O’Brien, by making an effort at the gym, you can enjoy your holiday celebrations and stay fit at the same time.

 “You don’t have to run a marathon to keep the weight off,” she says. “A moderate workout can go a long way toward staying fit.”

 Being aware of what it takes to burn off calories can be a big help this season. Remember that:

  • Fifteen minutes of moderate treadmill running can burn up to 260 calories – that’s enough to burn off a piece of grandma’s special pumpkin pie.
  • Thirty minutes of moderate elliptical training may burn 280 calories – the equivalent of that serving of mashed potatoes and gravy you’ve been craving.
  • Thirty minutes on the stationary bike will likely burn around 200 calories – a serving of delicious bread stuffing.
