AugieAndLynn.jpgIf you watched NBC's "Today Show" on the morning of Nov. 13, you saw the inspiring story of Life Fitness co-founder, Augie Nieto. In 2005, Nieto was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a degenerative muscle condition that paralyzes and ultimately takes the lives of its patients three to five years after diagnosis.

If you’re familiar with children’s television shows, you might know Kim Possible from the Disney Channel. Possible is a teenage crime-fighting, justice-loving wonder woman, and a Jill of all trades. But her most notable quality, is that she can do anything she sets her mind to with poise and dedication. A similar, but real-life personality is Kim Ingleby of Bristol, England. When described by one of her endorsements for the Life Fitness third annual Personal Trainer to Watch competition, the endorser referred to Ingleby as “Kim Possible.”

MusicPost8.13.13.jpgYou’re on your last lap. Your lungs are burning, and your legs are yelling at you to stop. But then it happens, Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out for a Hero blasts through your headphones and suddenly it’s a whole new ballgame. You don’t feel as exhausted, your legs start moving a little faster, and you finish your run the way you wanted—like a boss.

Congratulations to Life Fitness President Chris Clawson for winning the 2013 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Midwest Region. Chris shares this honor with his predecessor, Life Fitness co-founder Augie Nieto, and former Ernst and Young Entrepreneur Award recipient. The awards are the culminating event of the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, the nation’s most prestigious gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies.

When Chris Clawson took on the role of Life Fitness President in 2010, he wanted to return the company to its roots as innovators and industry leaders. His first move was to position Life Fitness as tech leaders in the fitness industry, while also creating products that would dictate the market, as opposed to react to it. Under his leadership, Life Fitness introduced a wave of ground-breaking tech advancements in the fitness industry, including the Discover Tablet Consoles and LFopen, the industry’s first and only truly open product platform.

Augie Nieto is a Life Fitness and industry celebrity, and a personality I’ve come to admire for his passion, drive and wit. Having given life to our company, and cementing a commitment to finding a cure for ALS, his appearance with our team at IHRSA, the world’s largest fitness trade show, energizes everyone with a spirit unmatched by traditional pre-show pep talks.

By now many of you have seen Synrgy360 and its launch video. Well, so did the Indy500. In March, the Indy500 race promoters reached out to us at Life Fitness after seeing Synrgy at launch, and were so excited about the product they requested to air the video hourly on the jumbotron throughout the world’s best-attended sporting event.

You can barely dance on stable ground. Yet, when you see these treadmill dance videos you want to try it- don’t you? You find yourself running in step with the beat of your music and think, maybe I’ll just add in a shoulder pump.

Or, maybe that’s just me. And, my love of rhythm has only grown since Life Fitness added music video content to our cardio products.

Are you a focused exerciser, or a distracted one? Me, I need distraction. I don’t want to be alone with my thoughts—I think too much. I need the TV on, earphones in, and possibly a book to scan during commercials. Then, put me in a gym where all the energy around me keeps me motivated.

Our company President Chris Clawson is on Capitol Hill today, urging congress men and women to support PEP grants, awarded to schools and community-based organizations that provide physical education programs for youth. We're also urging leaders to pass the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act which allows individuals to pay for various physical activities, such as health club memberships, fitness programs and exercise equipment with pre-tax dollars from a tax-favored account.

As fierce as ever, Augie Nieto’s team of supporters kicked off the 2013 annual BASH event for Augie’s Quest echoing his eloquent words just eight years earlier “I’m gonna beat this SOB”.

On March 21st at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, BASH attendees snickered at Augie’s tenacity, delivered with blunt-force and cutting wit.

Life Fitness co-founder Augie Nieto was diagnosed with ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” in 2005. ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, eventually leading to loss of muscle movement. The median survival time from the onset of the disease to death is little more than three years, and only four percent of those affected survive longer than 10 years. Ever the fighter, Augie stunned the room last week when he showed guests he was getting stronger. Having experienced almost complete muscle failure in his legs and wheelchair-bound today, Augie proved recovering strength by leg-pressing 100 lbs on stage that night.

At Life Fitness, there is company lingo and code names you can fake like you know—“Project Cutter,” “Fungle” and “ASAP”. But there is one name you better know: Augie Nieto, a Life Fitness legend.

As our current company president, Chris Clawson said it best “Augie was the co-founder of Life Fitness and piloted our company to prominence as the leading fitness equipment manufacturer in the world, but his greatest accomplishments came after he was diagnosed with ALS.”

For some people, working out feels natural, almost like an addiction. Not for this girl. Every day I beg myself – Please go work out, please go work out. And, if you’re like me, who better to push you than a trainer?

I mix personal trainers into my weekly workout routine to keep me on task, teach me new things and hold me accountable when I start skipping my lunges. Here are some things to look for when  choosing a personal trainer:

In a fitness company, you’re bound to be introduced to new diets. There’s gluten-free, grain-free, vegan, Atkins, primal, paleo and all-carb. No. All-carb only exists in my dreams. Here, we’ll attempt a clean recipe, low carbs.  I found this recipe on MarksDailyApple.

Let’s start with the ingredients.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (15 ml)
  • 1 1/2 pounds (680 g) beef tenderloin or sirloin, cut into 1/4-inch thick slices (6 mm) that are 2 to 3 inches in length (5 cm to 7.6 cm)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (30 m)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped shallots (60 ml)
  • 8 ounces cremini or white mushrooms, thinly sliced (230 g)
  • 1 cup beef stock (250 ml)
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk (125 ml)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (250 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (15 ml)
  • Chopped fresh parsley or dill for an optional garnish

During yesterday's Bring Your Child to Work Day, we asked our future leaders:

What do you think it takes to make a SUCCESSFUL company?

If you ask us, the answers were very wise and we might just have a few future Kid Presidents on our hands. One of our guests, Mr. Andrew Rivera, went above and beyond, writing an essay on the importance of great products and innovation, using the video game industry as a great example. You can click here to read the full essay.

On behalf of the Life Fitness family and friends, we’d like to congratulate Life Fitness President Chris Clawson on his unanimous election as the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)  National Vice President, part of the organization’s volunteer leadership.

Chris has worked with the MDA for 7 years, extending the bridge between the fitness industry and the MDA that Life Fitness co-founder Augie Nieto established in 2005, when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease).
