Cure Cabin Fever

In many regions of the country, winter is two months too long! It’s dark. It’s cold. But as the saying goes, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Instead of staring longingly out the window and wishing for warmer weather, join the ranks of outdoor enthusiasts and cure your cabin fever with one of these winter workouts. Not only will you prove that you can exercise outside in any season, but you’ll also earn some bragging rights. Cold weather doesn’t stop you!
Take a hike. Winter hikes can be beautiful, and will snap you out of the winter doldrums. Dress in layers and wear warm hiking boots before you venture out. Work your body by going for distance, at a fast clip or conquering some hills. No hiking in your area? Get out and hoof it in your neighborhood. Add a pair of Yaktrax to your shoes or hiking boots for greater stability while walking on snow or ice.
Channel your inner winter Olympian. It’s time for the four S’s! Skate, snowboard, ski and snowshoe. All of these winter sports rely heavily on lower body strength as well as core strength. Even better, they are serious calorie torchers. According to the SIA (Snowsports Industries America), you can expect to burn about 45 percent more than walking or running at the same speed.
Grab the whole fam. Get outside as a family. Build a snowman or a snow fort. Or how about sledding? It’s a workout when you have to (1) hike up a hill in the snow, (2) help your kiddos get on the sled or up from the snow, and (3) lug that sled up the hill over and over again. Be a kid again yourself while fitting in a workout.
Brave the colder temps and the white stuff and work your body outside this winter. The cold air is exhilarating, isn’t it?
