On Monday, April 20th, thousands of runners, volunteers, and spectators will fill the 26.2 mile route from Hopkinton to Boston for the 119th running of the Boston Marathon. From the excitement at the starting line, to the crowd pouring out of Fenway Park after the Red Sox game just in time to see the runners pass by, to the exhaustion and triumph of the finishers as they complete the race, the Boston Marathon provides a day filled with excitement and emotion for anyone involved, either as a participant or a spectator.
While the Marathon will always have the memories of the horrific bombing of 2013, the city, state, and runners from all over the world have rallied around the city to triumph over the tragedy. Last year was a record year for the race in terms of participants and this year promises to be even bigger. This year, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker participated in ceremonies for One Boston Day, commemorating the 2 year anniversary of the tragedy on April 15. Tributes and moments of silence took place throughout the state, including at Fenway Park during the Red Sox clash with the Washington Nationals.
Run better with mind over matter
In addition to the weather issues, the mental stress and fatigue of marathon training can be extremely taxing on anyone preparing to toe the line in Hopkinton. In previous years, we have discussed how to prepare for a marathon and shared how one of our own has prepared for the big race with the help of the Arc Trainer. While sharing programs and testimonials can be inspiring to others, the fact remains that this is not an easy race to train for and staying mentally tough is important.
Preparing for the race
Monday will be the next race in the storied history of the Boston Marathon. The next race has always been something to look forward to. For most marathoners, they will cross the finish line on Monday and after giving their bodies time to recover, will begin focusing on the training for their next race.
