Interview with Luke Carlson

The Case for Evidence-Based Exercise
By Laura Cohen & Sam McGrath März 06, 2026

LF / HS: Thanks for joining us today, Luke. It’s always insightful to hear from leaders who are both practitioners and educators. Let’s start with your training philosophy—what drives it?

Luke Carlson: Thanks for having me. My philosophy stems from my background in exercise science at the University of Minnesota. I realized early on that understanding biomechanics, physiology, and motor learning was only valuable if it translated into practical, effective workouts. I saw a major gap between what science was saying and what most gyms were doing—and I made it my mission to close that gap.

That’s what we call Evidence-Based Exercise: training that’s grounded not in trends or tradition, but in peer-reviewed research. It’s standard practice in medicine and education, but still rare in fitness. Our goal is to change that.

LF / HS: That’s a powerful foundation. How do you keep the approach evolving?

Luke Carlson: Like scientists, we have to be willing to adapt. New evidence demands new methods. Unlike some coaches who act more like preachers or politicians—deeply rooted in their own dogma—we view ourselves as researchers in the gym. When the data shifts, so do we.

LF / HS: That’s refreshing. How did this lead to your embrace of machine-based strength training?

Luke Carlson: Early in my career, I was an assistant strength coach with the Minnesota Vikings. Our program used almost exclusively Hammer Strength and Nautilus machines—no squats, no power cleans. It surprised people, but the philosophy made sense: we were using better tools. Machines offer superior biomechanics, precision, and safety—especially when movement quality matters more than lifting tradition. A Hammer Strength machine represents a massive step forward in the technology of how we expose our muscles to resistance. I've been a fan of Hammer Strength machines and their biomechanics since 1997.

In a tech-driven world, we embrace wearables and recovery data but resist the tech that powers better strength training. That never made sense to me.

LF / HS: What’s the science telling us about exercise volume?

Luke Carlson: There’s a persistent myth that more is better. But controlled studies have shown that one properly performed set can deliver the same benefits—or even better—than three or more. It’s about intensity and form, not volume.

This creates massive upside: less time in the gym, the same or better results. Our professional athletes loved that. So do our clients. It removes the #1 barrier to exercise: time.

LF / HS: That ties into your “30 minutes, twice a week” model?

Luke Carlson: Exactly. We structure sessions around 10 exercises—4 for lower body, a few for the midsection, and 4–5 for upper body. And yes, we train the tibialis anterior—on a machine built for it. We leave nothing out.
By training to momentary muscle failure, and allowing for proper recovery between sessions, we get maximum return in minimum time. It’s efficient, measurable, and effective.

LF / HS: So how do you define proper form?

Luke Carlson: It’s all about controlled movement. Slow, deliberate lifting and lowering. No momentum. That maximizes motor unit recruitment and keeps joints safer by minimizing force. Speed increases risk. Precision builds strength.

LF / HS: You’ve said that exercise shouldn’t hurt.

Luke Carlson: If you’re injured, by definition, you weren’t exercising—you were probably recreating.. By definition, exercise is meant to improve physiology, not diminish it. We have an entire medical field, sports medicine, to deal with these injuries. And you know what the medicine is? It’s exercise.

LF / HS: Final thought: When will the broader fitness world catch up to this approach?

Luke Carlson: I think we’re at the inflection point now. The public is realizing they’re not just “called to move”—they’re called to get stronger, especially as they age. The most predictive variable for health outcomes is muscular strength, not steps or mobility. I believe more people, and more gyms, are ready for this shift.

See how Hammer Strength equipment supports this next evolution in fitness.
