Creating A Premier Fitness Facility THE CHALLENGE
As part of an $85 million renovation, Samford University sought to turn its 165,000-square-foot campus recreation complex into a world-class fitness facility. The goal was to create a space that prioritized student health and well-being—nurturing both physical and mental wellness while fostering a sense of community. The new facility needed to offer state-of-the-art amenities to support student development and provide a dynamic space where students could gather, engage, and thrive.
A Decade-Long Partnership, Built on Innovation The Process
For over 10 years, Samford University has trusted Life Fitness and Hammer Strength to support its fitness initiatives. This project required extensive collaboration with university staff to design one of the best campus recreation centers in the country. Through in-depth meetings, architectural and electrical planning, and sharing industry-leading insights, Life Fitness ensured that the space reflected the latest fitness trends.
To maximize Samford’s investment, Life Fitness helped the university find buyers for its existing equipment, reducing costs and optimizing the budget. The final design incorporated multi-use courts, dedicated studios for fitness, dance, and esports, a cutting-edge weight room, and a multipurpose training area.
A State-of-the-Art Recreation Center The Outcome
The final facility features over 200 Life Fitness and Hammer Strength pieces, providing students and staff with expanded opportunities for physical fitness and mental wellness. The investment stands among the largest capital projects in Samford’s history and plays a vital role in the university’s campus master plan.
