Some days it can feel impossible to get a nutritional meal to everyone in the family. Chef is just one of your many titles—and sometimes, it’s not one you’re fond of having. On the days when you’re too busy to get a meal on the table turn to protein smoothies. They’re perfect for the whole family, packed with nutrients and easy to make. Here are reasons to enjoy protein smoothies as a family.

They’re Packed with Nutrients

Protein smoothies are an easy way to make sure you and your child are both getting all of your essential nutrients. Especially when you add all the right ingredients. To make sure that happens, follow this simple recipe: Protein + Veggies + Fruit + Fat + Liquid + natural sweetener (optional)

Fat is needed to help certain nutrients absorb from the product, while vegetables increase total nutrients and mitigate sugar content—using only fruit could mean your kid may be getting too much. Not to mention, it’s harder to get your kids to eat veggies than fruit. Sneak it in with smoothies. Finally, protein helps everyone stay full longer and gives your brains and bodies what they need to stay fueled.

They’re Kid Friendly

You may not think of kids when you think of protein smoothies, or protein shakes, but they’re the perfect meal for your growing little ones. Not only are they packed with nutrients (we’ll talk about that in a minute), but kids will love flavored protein powder. Most powders come in chocolate and vanilla, even sugar cookie and peanut butter.

The key is choosing kid-friendly protein powder. Keep a few tips in mind from the guide, Protein Powder For Kids: A Complete Guide:

  • Stick with organic ingredients. No preservatives or chemicals.
  • Be wary of natural flavors, which may have originated from a “natural” source, but were then treated with chemicals later in the process.
  • Always choose whey protein. “This type of protein is made from cow’s milk and is one of the most common forms of protein found in powders—it’s also commonly found in baby formulas and is made up of casein and whey,” explains the guide.

They’re Loved By Picky Eaters

If you struggle to get your child to eat healthy foods, smoothies may the best way to get nutrients into their growing body. “Around my house summer is smoothie season. It’s by far the easiest, healthiest breakfast I can make for me and the kids… and everyone will happily eat/drink it,” says Kristin Eldridge, mom and former teacher.

If you’re worried about your picky eater getting sick of them easily, think again. Eldridge explains, “Plus, there are endless varieties to be made. So if your kiddo gets bored all you have to do is swap out a few ingredients and, presto, a whole new breakfast.”

They’re Quick and Easy

Protein smoothies are not only quick easy to make—put it in a blender, pour into a cup, enjoy!—but there’s also minimal clean up. Because everything is going into a blender, you don’t have to worry about cutting fruit into small pieces or mashing the banana.

To make them even easier (and faster), use these simple ideas:

  • Cut and freeze all fruits and veggies in baggies. Each bag should contain everything you need for one smoothie. Just pour it in, add the protein, liquid and fat, and blend.
  • Freeze your liquids (cow’s milk, almond milk, etc.) in a freezer tray.
  • Add liquids first (if not frozen) for easier blending. This also helps protect your blades so your blender lasts longer.

They’re Perfect for On the Go

Sometimes you need to eat on the fly. The entire family is busy, between soccer practice and your own commitments, and that to-do list won’t be clear any time soon. That’s why protein smoothies are perfect for the whole family. They’re spill-friendly for on-the-go eating, and they have all the nutrients your little one needs. Rather than making a full meal, sticking it in Tupperware and hoping for the best, you can pour the smoothie in a cup with a lid and be on your way.

Not to mention, you can make sure you’re getting enough to eat, instead of running off to work with just a few bites from your kid’s plate. If you don’t have time to eat it right away, use these storage tips from Health Coach, Elizabeth Rider, to help your smoothie stay good for longer:

  • Always store in a glass container with an airtight lid.
  • Fill the container to the very top to avoid oxidation.
  • Add lemon juice; the extra vitamin C will help slow oxidation.

It may need a stir when you’re ready to eat, and then you can enjoy.
