Lat Pulldowns & Upper Body Strength

July 01, 2024
This article will provide more detail about strength training with pulldown machines.

What Activities Use the Lats?

The lat pulldown works the latissimus dorsi, the largest muscle in the back, as well as your biceps, rear delts, rhomboids and traps. This movement gives you the opportunity to train many muscles at the same time, and develop overall strength in your back and upper body.

These muscles play an important role in posture, as well as allowing you to develop pulling strength, and pull yourself up and over an object, like you would do in activities like rock climbing.

Why Is It Important to Exercise the Lats?

In the era where we are tethered to our desks, developing and retaining good posture has never been more important. Strengthening these muscles can promote good posture, and help ward off osteoporosis, arthritis, and other injuries due to lack of mobility and strength as we age.

For many of us, upper body strength has always been a challenge. Many of us have given ourselves a pass by choosing to prioritize cardio activities to slim down, rather than upper body exercises to build strength.

Lat Pulldown Trainer Tip

Use the Insignia Series Dual Axis Pulldown to give your clients a versatile upper body workout. Some features of the Insignia Series Pulldown machine include:
  • Dual Axis Technology®, which provides multi-directional resistance and user defined divergence, creating a natural pulling motion for a more effective lat muscle contraction
  • Fixed angled thigh pads that provide easy entry/exit while accommodating different height users
  • Multiple handle angles to offer increased exercise variety
