Act Like a Kid Part 6 of 6: Hula Hooping

Hula Hooping to Burn Calories

The next time you are at a park, watch someone hula hoop. They can take those little plastic hoops from the dollar store and spin them around their waists for what seems like an eternity. They do this because it is fun, but they are also developing strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination and even the ability to focus and pay attention.

Why adults should hula hoop

There is a reason hula hooping is making a comeback and being marketed to us as a great workout - that's because it is.

Why hula hooping may be hard for adults

Sometimes when we could not do this as a kid, we gave up too early. Now that you are an adult you may find you get the hang of this movement even though you couldn’t before.

Dollar store hoops often don’t work for a number of reasons, the first being that they are probably too small for you: according to this post on hula hooping as an adult, they recommend to start out with a 40” hoop, much bigger than your standard dollar store fare. A good rule of thumb is to get one that comes up to your belly button (or a little higher) when you set it on the ground.

The hoop may also be too light, which does not allow for you to easily spin it, especially if you are new to the activity. Choose one that is around 1-2 lbs. to start.

How to start hula hooping

The most important thing to know about hooping is to practice good form. Below is a great tutorial video that demonstrates proper form when learning to waist hoop. Another video helps with troubleshooting common beginner errors to get you on your way to a great core workout.
