November 2014 Workout Playlist: Old & New Gym Favorites

Whether you’re heading out for a run, getting your cardio in on the Arc Trainer, strength training, or taking a class, the right music is key to helping you maintain focus and get the most out of your workout. Over the years I’ve put together dozens of playlists for different types of events such as youth football camps and combines, workout demos and fitness challenges. I always enjoy seeing the athletes get a little extra hop in their step when a certain song or beat came over the sound system, and I feel the same way when I am in the gym.

I’m always looking for new music to add to my playlists for the gym or to run to, but I definitely have some favorites that always are a part of the mix as well. Below is a playlist I’ve put together designed for a 60-minute workout, featuring some favorites and a few new songs that may soon become staples.

Take a look at the playlist below and check out why the first seven have become “must-haves” in my workout playlists. From there, check out 8 new songs that have great beats and lyrics that I think are perfect for the gym, the road, or the trail.

I’ll be creating new lists every few weeks and also keeping one of all the tracks that get listed here on the blog.

  • Change The Game” – Jay Z featuring Beanie Siegel and Memphis Bleek

One of my all-time favorites. A classic Jay Z flow, a great beat and the last line, which I adopted years ago as my motto, “I will not lose”.

  • Banquet” – Bloc Party

This is the song I go to anytime I need a little something extra on my run. The perfect beat to keep you on pace, no matter how tired you get.

  • Forever” – Drake, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Eminem

Another great hip-hop beat for a run, and that last verse by Slim Shady will fire you up every time you hear it. I can't help but rap along with him when it comes on, just like LeBron James a few years ago:

  • No Easy Way Out” – Robert Tepper

Sure, most people will pick “Eye of the Tiger” as their favorite song from the Rocky movies, but this one is another  must-have for me on my run.

  • Put On” – Jeezy featuring Kanye West

How every team hasn’t used this in their marketing/promotions or in-stadium has always amazed me. Perfect pump-up song.

  • Remember the Name” – Fort Minor

I don’t always have hip-hop on my workout and run playlists – sometimes I need a little but more of an edge. This song does just that.

  • (Rock) Superstar" – Cypress Hill

Another of my favorites. Those opening bells and the guitars throughout keep me going in the middle of my workout.

I think there are some really great new songs on here, whether it is just because they have a great beat ("Dangerous", "Take Me Home", "Break Free"), are popular songs you're already listening to ("Animals", "All About That Bass"), or are good for a warm-up/cooldown ("Cool Kids", "Take Me To Church"). The final song on this playlist, "Uptown Funk", is one I just heard this week and makes me thing of some old school Prince or George Clinton and was one I had to include in case you haven't heard it yet!

A Call for Suggestions
Hopefully, this playlist will keep you as fired up during your next workout as it does for me! If you’ve got suggestions for future playlists, be sure to let me know in the comments. I've already gotten several and I'll be sure to add them to future lists!
