Progression in the Tennessee Titans Weight Room

The 2018 Tennessee Titans have a revamped coaching staff, led by new head coach Mike Vrabel, that hopes to improve upon a 9-7 record in 2017. One holdover from the Mike Mularkey regime is strength and conditioning coach Tom Kanavy. The energetic Kanavy joined the Titans in 2015 and was named head strength and conditioning coach in 2018.

He has built a 22-year career in the NFL working with the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles and the Titans. Kanavy also spent time with the University of Miami, Penn State and Temple in the early to mid-90s.

As you might expect, the goal in the Titans’ busy weight room is constant improvement. And Kanavy pushes his players with a focus on progression.

“We monitor all of the players,” he said. “They have prescribed weights. We track the heaviest weights they used for the day and basically progressively we plan the next workout based on the results of today. As guys are handling those projected weights easily…we don’t wait, we ramp them up. If they’re a little too heavy for a guy, we’ll have them stay with those weights or back them down. Then it almost becomes a progression from one workout to the next. Time is crucial. We need to get the most out of each and every day.”
