The Dissection of Thanksgiving

As you are driving back from Grandma’s house with your belt cutting into your belly you will tell yourself, “never again will I overdo it like that;  “that,” referring to the overindulgences of Thanksgiving. Restraint and portion control are in your hands and having a plan of “attack” for your evening repast and squeezing in an early date with the Cybex Arc Trainer or Treadmill can get you through Thanksgiving while skipping the self-loathing, and still maintaining all the rich festive flavors.

The Calories of Thanksgiving

Below are the calorie counts and the amount of sugar you would generally consume with normal portions. Go for seconds… thirds and more, you will be ratcheting these figures into the 3000 calories range! Taking into consideration one pound of body fat equals 3500 calories you could expect to pack on one pound this day. By the end of the holidays you could easily pack on additional five pounds or more. In ten years that is fifty pounds of pure fat.

So, besides upping your exercise prior to the Big Day, consider substitutions that cut the calories without diminishing your enjoyment of this special day.  For example, I am not a big dessert fan, so I cut out the pumpkin pie in favor of a glass (or two) of good wine.  Also, mashed potatoes are empty calories—over-processed potatoes with way too much butter.  I skip them in favor of nutrient-rich sweet potatoes, sans marshmallows and brown sugar.  Sweet potatoes are loaded with Vitamin A and fiber and really taste quite sweet without added sugars.  With a little forethought (and extra Arc time), you can have a joyous, guilt-free Thanksgiving.
