Fitness Fads and Fitness Trends: What Will Drive the Market in 2016?

Every year, the ACSM conducts a survey among thousands of fitness professionals to determine the top fitness trends in the industry, as well as finding out what may have been a fad and seen its time pass. Last year, we took a deeper look at the 2015 trends and excitedly shared information about how Cybex offerings paired nicely with several of the trends. With 2016's list now available, we again are at the forefront of offering the best solutions in the industry for many of the trends that fitness professionals deem the most important of the coming year.

2016 Worldwide Top Fitness Trends Survey

This is the tenth year of the ACSM worldwide fitness trends survey. The survey is designed to confirm or introduce new trends that have a perceived impact on the industry. It is not intended to recognize or discuss fitness fads, which do not have the impact that a trend does, even if it has, in some cases, more enthusiasm behind it than a trend.

The survey lists 40 possible trends and asked over 25,000 professionals from the health and fitness industries (corporate, clinical, community, and commercial) as well as academic professionals. Nearly 3,000 respondents submitted their feedback on the survey, representing more than an 11% return rate. These results were used to determine the top twenty trends for 2016.

Fitness Fads vs. Fitness Trends

In the ACSM survey results, they define a trend as "a general development or change in a situation or in the way that people are behaving." A fad is defined as "a fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period."

These two definitions, combined with the nine years of results, help us understand why things like Educated and Experienced Fitness Professionals and Strength Training have remained strong fitness trends for years. It clarifies why things like Body Weight Training and HIIT Training have risen steadily into the trend category, and why activities such as Zumba had instant success but quickly faded from the list. Indoor cycling may not have made the list, but it is a staple activity in most full-service health clubs.

Fitness Fads and Fitness Trends 2

As has been the case for most of the ten years of the survey, nearly all of the top trends remain on the list from year to year, with only their position changing. This year was no different, with 17 of the 20 trends returning from 2015. However, what was different from other years was that one of these new trends, wearable technology, not only entered the list, but entered at #1 for 2016.

As was the case last year, several of the trends listed in the top twenty align perfectly with product offerings from Cybex. Below are several of the trends from the list and reliable solutions from Cybex that have us excited to see the calendar turn to January 1.

#3. High Intensity Interval Training

Last year's #1, HIIT isn't going anywhere anytime soon. With busy schedules, most everyone is looking for a solution that is both effective and efficient. HIIT fits that bill. Last year, we teased a solution from Cybex for HIIT and since, the buzz has been off the charts about SPARC, High Intensity Interval Training Evolved. Get on and go. Offering circuit and interval modes, SPARC (Strength Power Accelerated Resistance Cardio) provides benefits that help users to lose fat, build muscle, gain strength, increase metabolism, and improve power.

#4. Strength Training

Maintaining its hold on the number four position, strength training remains a top-five trend for the last five years in the ACSM survey. While some form of strength training is incorporated into almost every comprehensive program, and SPARC has provided a way to provide strength training in cardio, we are excited to see selectorized strength training continue to help athletes of all levels reach their fitness goals through our Prestige VRS line. With the unveiling of our informational Prestige app in early 2016 both on iTunes and on our website, viewers will be able to follow along with each piece in the line and learn basic and advanced movements to try.

#5. Educated, Certified, and Experienced Fitness Professionals

Through the Cybex Research Institute, we will continue to provide original research and create education opportunities (including CECs) to help further all levels of learning and building knowledge bases. Cybex Product Education Specialists travel throughout North America educating trainers and fitness professionals on optimizing the use of Cybex equipment. In 2016, we will be offering more educational workshops and seminars than ever before, as well as providing new online education options from our own Cybex Research Institute. Be sure to stay informed by following us on social media and here on the blog.

The Best of the Rest

In addition to these three huge fitness trends, we at Cybex are also excited to provide solutions for functional fitness (#7), fitness programs for older adults (#8), exercise and weight loss (#9), group personal training (#11), sport-specific training (#15), circuit training (#18), and core training (#19).
