Designing for Belonging

How Samford University’s Campus Rec Strategy Balances Fitness, Inclusion, and Leadership
September 07, 2026
Campus recreation is no longer just about treadmills and intramurals. At institutions like Samford University, it’s a strategic pillar supporting student success, mental well-being, and campus culture. Under the leadership of Nick Madsen, Executive Director of Campus Recreation, Samford is reimagining the role of fitness on campus not just as a service, but as a community anchor.

In a recent conversation with Life Fitness, Madsen offered a candid look into how his team is evolving Samford’s recreation programs and spaces to meet shifting student needs, support faculty and staff, and create an environment where leadership and belonging thrive.

A Place Where the Whole Person Matters

Madsen describes campus recreation as a vital outlet from academic stress; one that helps students balance mental, physical, and social health.

“Our vision is holistic well-being,” he shared. “We’re not just a gym. We're trying to build community.”

That vision comes to life through intentional space design and programming. Samford’s newly upgraded facility includes more than just fitness equipment. It features lounge areas, social spaces, massage chairs, and even food service—reflecting Madsen’s belief that wellness isn’t one-dimensional.

From Athletes to Esports: Welcoming Every Student

A unique challenge in higher education is serving both NCAA athletes and the general student population without making one feel secondary to the other. At Samford, the recreation and athletics facilities share proximity, but not programming.

“We’re mindful of how we schedule,” said Madsen. “We want students to have access without feeling overwhelmed. And we want athletes to engage in campus life outside of their sport.”

Inclusivity also drives equipment selection and programming. Madsen emphasized the importance of reaching non-traditional gym users from esports players to outdoor adventure club members with tailored activities and approachable spaces.

“Not everyone walks into a weight room feeling confident. We’ve tried to build environments that reduce intimidation like functional zones, quieter pockets, and adjustable lifting areas.”

A Post-Pandemic Shift in Expectations

Like many rec leaders, Madsen has seen a lasting shift in how students engage with wellness and fitness after the recent pandemic.

“Students still value large open areas, but we’ve seen more demand for individualized experiences, things like personal training and smaller classes,” he said. “It’s less about crowds, more about customization.”

That insight is reflected in everything from Samford’s layout to the types of equipment they choose, flexible, durable options that allow a wide swath of different users to train how and when they want.

Wellness for Faculty and Staff—Because Their Health Impacts Students Too

While students are the primary users, Madsen believes faculty and staff access to recreation is equally important for the campus community as a whole.

“If our staff and faculty are well, that positively impacts the student experience,” he noted. “We want to support everyone’s well-being, not just the student body.”

Tracking Engagement, Not Just Attendance

When it comes to measuring success, Madsen looks beyond numbers.

“Sure, we track usage. We monitor which pieces of equipment get the most action, so we know what to replace or upgrade,” he said. “But what we really care about is whether students are finding value. Are they engaging, do they feel like this is their space?”

To that end, the Samford team regularly collects student feedback and taps into broader industry trends to guide programming, equipment updates, and new initiatives.

Growing Leaders Through Rec

Campus rec isn’t just a place for students to sweat, it’s also where many get their first taste of leadership. Samford identifies potential student leaders in club sports and invites them to mentor or coach within the facility.

“We’re cultivating leadership,” Madsen explained. “Students are learning how to support their peers, how to manage, how to communicate. That’s real-world development.”

A Facility That Draws Attention and Collaboration

Samford’s rec center has drawn attention well beyond campus. A recent social post by Life Fitness featuring the facility became the company’s highest-engagement post in months. Other institutions have taken notice and it’s not lost on Nick. Auburn University recently toured the space and plans to implement some of Samford’s ideas.

That kind of collaboration is key, said Madsen. “We’re not trying to keep our playbook secret. If what we’re doing can help another school build community, that’s a win for everyone.”

Advice to Other Campus Rec Leaders: Build for Belonging

Asked what guidance he’d offer to other universities designing the next era of campus rec, Madsen was clear:

“Create a space that makes everyone feel like they belong. Your design, your equipment, your staff; it all communicates who is welcome. Be intentional. Be inclusive. And listen to your students.”

Campus Rec as a Strategic Partner

Samford University’s approach under Nick Madsen is a case study in how campus recreation can and should play a vital role in the student experience. It’s not an amenity. It’s a strategy. One that supports mental health, encourages connection, and prepares the next generation of leaders, all while making wellness feel accessible to every person on campus.
